Three Common Causes of a Clogged Shower Drain

There's nothing worse than coming back from a long workout and finding yourself ankle-deep in water halfway through your shower. Tough clogs can cause your shower to have trouble draining or completely block the drains. Several factors can cause a clog, including minor scum blockages or major obstructions in the main sewer line. Recognizing some of these common causes can help determine whether you need to call a professional.

A Buildup of Hair and Dead Skin Cells

It's natural for you to shed hair and old skin cells while taking a shower. As hair fibers and dead skin accumulate, they can get stuck to the sides of the shower's pipes and trap other materials, which will obstruct water drainage. Placing a hair guard on top of your drain is a simple and affordable way to prevent hair clogs.

Hard Water Minerals

Almost 85% of American households have hard water (water that contains a large amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium). Though hard water doesn't have any negative effects on people, it can be a nuisance when it comes to home plumbing systems. When hard water is heated, these minerals can form a solid residue of calcium carbonate that sticks to the sides of the drain as you shower. You can break up small mineral deposits by pouring vinegar down the drain. More heavily clogged pipes might have to be replaced.

Soap Scum

Soap scum is another common cause of shower clogs. When the minerals in hard water react with soap, they can form a white, sticky residue called soap scum. This may attach to clumps of hair and other debris lodged in the drain. You can pour boiling water or a mix of ammonia and water into the pipe to help clear out soap scum residue.
