People rarely give much thought to their home’s plumbing system until it becomes a problem. At that point, they are often faced with costly repairs. Even worse, serious issues can deprive a home of running water for days or even weeks. With a little bit of DIY maintenance from time to time, these expenses and headaches can often be avoided. Here are two simple tips to keep plumbing running smoothly.
Take Preventative Measures
Clogs alone can be a pain to fix, but they also cause pressure to build up in plumbing, putting stress on pipes and their connectors. Placing screens on the drains of sinks and showers while making sure only waste and toilet paper get flushed down the toilet will help. To prevent clogs, homeowners should place all of their food scraps in the trash before rinsing plates and bowls in the sink and make sure not to pour hot cooking grease down the sink because it will congeal in the pipes once it cools.
Relieve Some Pressure
Most people like lots of water pressure when showering, but if it’s too high, water pressure can strain a home’s plumbing system. If it feels like it might be on the strong side, homeowners can buy a bib gauge at any hardware store to check their shower’s water pressure. The normal range is between 40 and 85 psi. If it’s any higher, it might be worth investing in a pressure reducer to prevent needing more costly repairs down the road.
